In Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, An adolescent boy named Huck Finn goes on a physical and moral journey down the Mississippi River. Huck and Jim meet on Jackson’s island where they are running away from their own problems. Huck is running from his abusive father and Jim is running slavery. Together Jim and Huck travel together along the Mississippi River and encounter many people and face many obstacles. Through these instances Huck is able to become a moral person. Huckleberry Finn’s development of moral awareness is emblematic of his friendship with Jim; through traveling down the river, Huck is able to break free and become a moral person. Huck doesn’t view Jim as a real person because he is a slave. Huck reveals that he doesn’t view Jim as an equal person. Huck and Tom found Jim thinking he was being captured by slaves very comedic. When Jim started to boast about being captured by witches he describes as, â€Å"Jim was monstrous proud about it, and he got so he wouldn’t hardly notice the other niggers† (Twain 9). Huck thinks Jim is boasting about being captured by witches and is being very rude on the way Jim is acting about it. He uses the word monstrous to describe how Huck feels about what happened to Jim, although all Huck is trying to do is be sarcastic about what Jim was doing. Huck is sarcastic about Jim because he is a slave and society views slaves as less educated than wh ite people. Huck has a feeling of superiority to Jim since Jim is a slave. Huck proves that his morals are immature based on those instances. Because Huck Finn’s morality has increased since the time he started traveling down the river with Jim, Huck is able to form a friendship with Jim. Huck’s first Huck has the ability to become a moral person when Jim gives him a reality check.
